Robert Cutshall, President of Omega Castings, Inc., talks about his company.

Bob, you’ve said that you provide the best quality, the best delivery, and the best price – that’s a lot to promise.

There are a number of reasons, but if I had to put it into one sentence, it would be that we utilize the optimum foundry techniques available in metallurgy, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and kinematics coupled with advanced engineering and design. In our case “better” doesn’t have to mean higher price or longer delivery time.

Could you break it down a little and give some specifics on quality?

Well, we’ve never had to replace a belt due to poor integrity of our compounds either metallurgically or physically. We machine our links to eliminate mechanical problems, and each link must have it’s own integrity. To ensure this, we utilize metals certified from independent laboratories. We use periodic x-rays to prove the link’s integrity and watch for internal discontinuity. As a result… no voids, no shrinks.

Quality generally costs more. You say “best price.” How?

Design is something we work very hard at; for instance, our drive drum is produced with a double-tooth profile to literally double the life of the drum and yet it’s less expensive. That goes back to what I said about using optimum techniques. Design produces quality – management and production techniques produce the lower price.

How about product life?

I suppose the hardest thing to “promise” is a certain, cast in concrete, “life.” The variables of use, installation, maintenance and others make it tough to make an all-encompassing statement. I can say, however, that because of the things we’ve talked about, the longer life is the probability.

Can you be a little more specific?

An example would be the design of one of our links; under test conditions the tensile strength was shown to be 5,000 pounds greater than a similar link produced by competitors. Our drive drums are machine ground to provide maximum bearing surface against the links. This also gives added assurance that the belt will track properly after installation.

What about delivery?

That also has been thought out; our location, certainly, is part of the key. We’ve proven over the years that, regardless of whether our job load is heavy or light, our delivery performance is uniform. Our facility is designed for maximum production flexibility, in both personnel and product. In our given field key materials are available close by; rail, truck and air services are five minutes away… we’re even less than a mile from a U.S. Port of Entry and its foreign trade zone.

What do you say to the company who doesn’t know you?

We do what we do extremely well, provide what’s needed on time and charge enough to let us live in Battle Creek. We’d like to know that if you’re asked about us, you’d say… good company.
